World open water race in Singapore postponed over water quality

SINGAPORE: The women鈥檚 10km open water race at the world swimming championships in Singapore has been postponed because of poor water quality, governing body World Aquatics said on Tuesday.

A review of the course at Sentosa Island found water quality levels 鈥渆xceeding acceptable thresholds鈥, with organisers making the decision to postpone 鈥渋n the utmost interest of athlete safety鈥.

The women鈥檚 10km race was set to take place on Tuesday morning but has been pushed back to Wednesday, when the men鈥檚 event will also be held.

鈥淲orld Aquatics regrets the inconvenience caused by the postponement and acknowledges the commitment and preparation of all athletes, coaches and teams,鈥 World Aquatics said in a statement.

鈥淭he health and safety of participants remain the highest priority in all competition-related decisions.鈥

World Athletics said tests had 鈥渃onsistently鈥 shown the water quality to be acceptable but that a sample taken on Sunday went over the limit.
