A woman patient who was allegedly sexually assaulted by co-male patient in the same ward at a government hospital in northeast Delhi, has died during treatment, the police said.
Officials familiar with the probe, however, said that prima facie, it appears that her death may not be linked to the assault.
While the 23-year-old accused has already been arrested, further action will be taken after the post-mortem report comes, an official said.
According to a senior police officer, the incident was reported at Jag Pravesh Chandra (JPC) Hospital where a a 23-year-old male patient allegedly sexually abused a woman patient.
The woman was later referred for treatment at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where she died on Tuesday night.
鈥淲e are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact reason behind her death. We will take further action after that,鈥 the police officer said.
According to the police, the accused man, identified as Mohd Faiz, who is a resident of Kachchi Khajuri, was admitted to the same ward as the victim in JPC Hospital.
Following the initial probe and statements from the victim, hospital staff, and other possible witnesses, a formal case was registered under appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to sexual assault and the accused was held.
The incident was reported at New Usmanpur police station, who registered the case.
