A 31-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men at a deserted roadside restaurant on Tuesday night in Odisha鈥檚 Mayurbhanj district, police said.
The woman was returning from returning to her maternal uncle鈥檚 home after meeting her male friend. The incident happened at a Dhaba under the jurisdiction of the Karanjia police station of the district, news agency PTI said, citing police.
The victim had visited her maternal uncle鈥檚 house and then headed to a nearby village to meet a friend. On her way back, two individuals on a motorcycle offered her a ride, according to the police officer. 鈥淭he motorists then took her to a deserted place where another associate joined them and allegedly raped her,鈥 the officer said.
According to the Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Karanjia in Odisha, Nabakrushna Nayak, the police have arrested one of the accused while the other two are absconding.
The woman鈥檚 family lodged an FIR on Wednesday evening.
Multiple cases of sexual violence have been reported in Odisha in the last two weeks. On June 15, a 20-year-old college student was gang-raped by 10 men on the Gopalpur sea beach in Ganjam district.
Then, on June 16, a 17-year-old girl from Keonjhar was allegedly gang-raped and killed.
Similarly, four men had gangraped a 31-year-old woman under the Baripada Sadar police station area on June 17. Police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by the victim鈥檚 husband and are investigating the allegations.
Later, on June 23, a fake homoeopathic doctor in Berhampur town sexually assaulted a minor girl, promising her admission to a nursing college.
According to the police, arrests have been made in the Gopalpur and Karanjai cases, and investigations are progressing in all incidents.
