Will There Be A Sequel To F1 The Movie? Here鈥檚 What The Director Has To Say

Brad Pitt鈥檚 F1 The Movie is now running successfully in theatres. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sports drama tells the story of Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a former Formula One star whose career comes to an end after he is involved in a life-threatening accident. Decades later, he returns to the high-stakes world of racing with only one wish to prove himself again.
Sonny joins APXGP, also called Apex, a small team owned by Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem. With a rising star, Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris, and Sonny working together, the team starts to surprise everyone. During their last race, it looked like Sonny would let Joshua win. However, that did not happen. As Joshua crashes into the real-life F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Sonny takes the lead and wins the race.
The director of F1, who is also behind other Hollywood hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, recently spoke about an alternate ending of Brad鈥檚 sports drama. Initially, he had thought of giving the win to Joshua. But in the end, he felt that it was important to finish Sonny鈥檚 story. He told Entertainment Weekly, 鈥淲e discussed the ending a lot, and there鈥檚 certainly a version where that happens. But ultimately, where we landed was the culmination of Sonny鈥檚 story.鈥
Pointing out that Joshua was at the beginning of his career and had many wins ahead, Joseph explained, 鈥淟ike he says to Sonny, 鈥業鈥檓 going to win a million, mate.鈥 So it feels like Sonny has achieved what he needs to achieve, but Joshua is just at the start of an incredible career.鈥
After proving himself in the world of Formula One once again, Sonny doesn鈥檛 stay with APX anymore. He was seen travelling to Baja, Mexico, for a new beginning in his life. In there, he inquires about the dune races and a 鈥渄river wanted鈥 advertisement, the same one which is seen in the opening sequence of the film. Despite knowing the dangers of returning to racing, Sonny moves forward with his next adventure.
When asked if the director has a sequel in mind, the 51-year-old told the media outlet that he has a few ideas in mind. 鈥淏ut that鈥檚 up to the audience to decide if they want to see it. I loved working with this group of people. I loved creating our own Formula One team. I鈥檇 love to see what鈥檚 up next for APXGP and Sonny Hayes,鈥 he said.
F1 The Movie was released theatrically on June 27.
