Will Elon Musk Pay the Price for Challenging Trump? Inside the 'Bro-Fight'

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called for a review of federal subsidies granted to Elon Musk鈥檚 companies, raising concerns over increased regulatory scrutiny of the billionaire鈥檚 sprawling business empire. Musk鈥檚 ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, X (formerly Twitter), and The Boring Company, are currently under oversight from several US regulatory agencies. Tesla remains under close watch by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), particularly over the safety of its advanced driver assistance systems. Last month, the agency requested more information after online videos showed a Tesla robotaxi allegedly driving in the wrong lane and speeding past another driverless vehicle in Austin, Texas. The regulator is examining safety concerns tied to poor weather conditions and roadway visibility, particularly involving the Full Self-Driving system, reports Reuters. In April, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began reviewing its decades-old spectrum-sharing rules after a request from SpaceX. The company is seeking access to new frequency bands to expand its satellite-based internet service, Starlink. The FCC’s review could lead to broader spectrum use for space activities, which are currently limited by power restrictions set in the 1990s. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees clinical trials for Neuralink, Musk鈥檚 brain implant company. While the agency initially rejected Neuralink鈥檚 application in 2023 due to safety concerns, it later approved trials in the US. The company is also exploring clinical trials in Canada and other countries. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates environmental compliance at SpaceX facilities, including wastewater discharges at the company鈥檚 Texas site. SpaceX must also undergo environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act, which includes assessments by the US Fish and Wildlife Service on the impact of rocket launches on the surrounding ecosystem. In September, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed a $633,000 fine against SpaceX for allegedly failing to meet licensing requirements before two launches in 2023. That investigation is still open. The FAA may impose further restrictions following multiple SpaceX rocket explosions. Musk faces Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) litigation related to his 2022 acquisition of Twitter. The agency is also reportedly investigating Neuralink, according to a letter posted by Musk’s lawyer last December. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which enforces consumer protection and antitrust laws, is investigating Musk鈥檚 social media platform X. The probe focuses on data privacy and allegations of coordination among watchdog groups that Musk claims were involved in an advertiser boycott against the platform.
