Premier League soccer star Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain, the Spanish civil guard confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday, just under two weeks after his wedding to wife Rute Cardoso.Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, was also killed in the single-vehicle accident after their car left the road.Newsweek reached out to Jota’s representative via email for comment on Thursday.The ContextJota, 28, played for Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Liverpool in 2020. The Portuguese international won the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the League Cup with Liverpool.Silva was also a professional player, for Portuguese side Penafiel.What To KnowJota wed his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22.In his final social media post before his death, Jota shared a video from their nuptials: “A day we will never forget,” he wrote on Instagram.The couple were childhood sweethearts, and Cardoso has a photo with Jota on her Instagram from 2013.They shared three young children together.What People Are SayingLiverpool Football Club in a statement on social media: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”We will continue to provide them with our full support.”The Portuguese Football Federation shared in a statement, per the BBC: “The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated. Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself. We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily.”Portuguese Prime Minister Lu铆s Montenegro said in a translated post via X, formerly Twitter: “The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal’s name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.”Former England and Manchester United star Gary Neville wrote on X: “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother.
