West Indies and Australia collide for an interesting multi-format tussle on the Caribbean shores starting Wednesday, June 25. The Aussies embark on a rare five-week tour of the West Indies, taking on the Men in Maroon in a three-Test series played for the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy before facing off against each other in what should be a fun-to-watch five-match T20I series.
The two teams begin their campaign in the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with the first Test in Barbados. After two decades of dominance by Kangaroos, the West Indies-Australia rivalry stood rejuvenated by the Calypso Kings’ memorable triumph in Brisbane early last year, with speedster Shamar Joseph running through the Aussie batting line-up at the Gabba to level a two-Test series 1-1.
It is on the back of that victory that the coming series has been extended to feature a third Test. That Test match in Jamaica will be a historic one as it will be only the second instance of West Indies hosting a pink-ball D/N Test.
The selection for the series has captured the attention, with Australia dropping Marnus Labuschagne and West Indies deciding to move on from ageing fast-bowler Kemar Roach. How the two sides rotate their options and look for a solution to long-standing problems would be worth following.
The T20I series later on will be providing a wonderful opportunity for the two sides to kick off their preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup, having missed out on the semifinals of the showpiece event’s previous iteration in the Caribbean last summer.
