'We cried a lot' - Ancelotti's son recalls Real Madrid departure

Davide said time with Real Madrid “was an extraordinary chapter that ended in the best way possible” and commented on the challenge of being his father’s assistant: “We disagree more often than not”

Carlo Ancelotti and his son, Davide Ancelotti, departed Real Madrid at the end of the 2024/2025 La Liga season.

They both spent four years at the Santiago Bernabeu and won the UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles.

What Davide said

Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide Ancelotti, spoke to Marca, as reported by Abola, about his recent time at Real Madrid and future plans.

“Considering how things unfolded, I think we had the best possible ending. Especially with the Bernabéu’s tribute after the Real Sociedad game. That should be appreciated, because in a club like Real Madrid, saying goodbye like that is very rare. It’s something I’ll never forget, and I don’t think my father will either,” he said about their departure.

When asked if he cried, he didn’t hesitate: “Yes, yes, and that helps, because he and I are both very emotional people. I’d say we cried a lot. I probably cried more than him. We’re criers and we don’t have a problem admitting it, because, at the end of the day, that’s who we are. The whole family is like that. My sister, my father, my grandfather was even worse…”

“I wouldn’t say there was a particularly romantic or dramatic moment between us. I can’t speak for him, but we share the same thought and feeling: it was an extraordinary chapter that ended in the best way possible. We’re aware of what this institution represents, and leaving Real Madrid this way is very difficult.

“So, we’re grateful and happy. And I think he really enjoyed his last day as Real Madrid’s coach. I think it was obvious. Having the opportunity to speak to the fans, to take pictures with the family in the stadium, with all the trophies… It was a beautiful day, a family day,” he added.

“Precisely because of the strong connection we had, saying goodbye was difficult, but also, again, a farewell we must be grateful for. We could have left differently, as often happens in this profession, where departures can be swift. So, being able to say goodbye this way is an honor,” he added.

Davide Ancelotti, who joined his father with the Brazilian national team, said: “I’m sure we disagreed more often than not, I think that’s what’s expected of me as an assistant and also what he needs (…) because he’s a very experienced coach, with a lot of conviction, and he needs a challenging environment.”

He also discussed reuniting with Vinícius Júnior: “We’re lucky to be able to continue working with him. He’s a player who has progressed a lot. You have to see his evolution since he arrived: it’s impressive. I think he’s a person with a very good heart. He’s a very good guy, a very hard worker, and there’s no malice in him.

“He’s a guy who gets ‘heated’ in games because maybe he needs to, like many athletes at his level. It’s part of the competitive spirit. He’s not the first and he won’t be the last. He’s aware of his weaknesses and needs an environment that supports him. He certainly doesn’t need an environment that blames him for everything.”

“And again, top-level players, during competition, sometimes need to clash. It’s happened to all the greats. Some manage these situations, like Maradona did or like Messi does, for example. And others confront them head-on, like Cristiano or Michael Jordan,” he reinforced.
