Victorian school staff member facing child abuse material charge

A primary school in northern Victoria has informed parents that one of its staff members has been charged with alleged possession of child abuse material.

Daniel Gommers, a 38-year-old former education support staff member at Mooroopna Primary School, has been charged with one count of possessing or controlling child abuse material for use through a carriage service.

It comes after investigators executed a search warrant at his Shepparton house in May.

Police allege the incidents happened between 2023 and 2025.

The ABC understands Mr Gommers was stood down from his job at the school when he was charged.

Principal Karen Goodwin sent a letter to parents this week informing them that Mr Gommers had been charged, describing it as “difficult news to share”.

“As a result of this charge, Daniel is not currently permitted to work in any Victorian school,” the letter states.

“The matter is currently before the court and it is important that you know that at this stage there is no information to suggest that the charge relates to any current or former student of our school, or that any student has been impacted.”

In a statement, the Department of Education said “as soon as the school was notified of the charge, which does not relate to any current or former student, they took all necessary immediate child safety steps”.

“We will continue to work with the school to ensure full support is available to the school community,” the statement said.

Mr Gommers previously appeared at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on May 26 and was bailed to reappear in court in October.
