US President Donald Trump said the United States is preparing to hold talks with Iran next week, raising the possibility of a new agreement focused solely on Iran鈥檚 nuclear program.
鈥淲e will talk to Iran next week. We may sign a deal,鈥 Donald Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in The Hague. He further said, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 care about an agreement- except for nuclear.鈥
The remarks came in response to a question about whether he was open to restarting broader negotiations with Tehran following the recent US-led strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Donald Trump bluntly replied, 鈥淚鈥檓 not. The way I look at it, they fought and the war is done.鈥
Asked why he believed the conflict between Israel and Iran had ended, Donald Trump pointed to his personal engagement with both sides, saying, 鈥淏ecause I dealt with both, and they are tired鈥 exhausted.鈥
He added, 鈥淐an it start again? I guess. Someday it can. It could maybe start soon.鈥 A ceasefire between the two nations appeared to be holding despite mutual accusations of violations in the hours following its announcement.
Donald Trump touted the US strikes on Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities, calling them a decisive show of force, saying, 鈥淎s you know, last weekend the United States successfully carried out a massive precision strike on Iran鈥檚 nuclear enrichment facilities, and it was very, very successful. It was called obliteration. No other military on earth could have done it, and now this incredible exercise of American strength has paved the way for peace with a historic ceasefire agreement.鈥
