US Police Officer Wildelis Rosa, 26, Dies After Brazilian Butt-Lift Surgery; Cause Linked To Blood Clots

Death of Wildelis Rosa highlights growing concerns over cosmetic surgery risks in Florida

A 26-year-old US police officer and Army reservist, Wildelis Rosa, tragically died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure in South Florida鈥攁 surgery that has gained immense popularity in recent years but remains one of the most dangerous cosmetic operations globally. Her death has been ruled as a pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots linked to the surgery, according to the Miami-Dade medical examiner.

Rosa鈥檚 passing is the latest in a disturbing pattern of cosmetic surgery-related deaths in the Miami area, where 25 fatalities have been recorded in just the past three and a half years, as per data from the county鈥檚 medical examiner.

What happened to Wildelis Rosa?

From birthday celebrations to a fatal collapse

Rosa had her pre-op blood work done on March 19, and underwent the BBL procedure at Prestige Plastic Surgery Clinic the next day, March 20 鈥 just days before her birthday.

Fat was removed from 12 different areas of her body and injected into her buttocks. She paid $7,495 for the operation. She stayed at a short-term rental during recovery, which is a common practice among medical tourists and out-of-town patients.

Her sister, Anamin Vazquez, said the family wasn鈥檛 aware of the procedure until March 22, Rosa鈥檚 birthday. After not hearing back from her, Vazquez grew concerned.

The next morning, Rosa鈥檚 friend 鈥 who had been staying with her 鈥 found her collapsed in the bathroom, unresponsive. CPR was attempted, but she died on March 23, just one day after turning 26.

What caused her death?

Fatal blood clots following cosmetic surgery

The Miami-Dade medical examiner attributed Rosa鈥檚 death to a pulmonary embolism, a blockage in the lung caused by blood clots 鈥 a known risk of surgeries like BBLs, which often involve long recovery times, limited mobility, and post-op complications.

Her symptoms before death included:

Severe painTrouble breathingPale skin, purple lips, and dilated pupilsNo sensation in legs or feetDrastically low blood pressure

Despite attending a follow-up appointment after surgery and raising concerns about pain, she was reportedly sent back to her rental home. She died hours later.

A deeper problem: BBL deaths on the rise

Miami emerges as a global hub for risky cosmetic procedures

South Florida, particularly Miami, has become a cosmetic surgery hotspot due to its low-cost clinics. But that reputation has come at a price.

The BBL procedure has a fatality rate estimated between 1 in 3,000 to 1 in 5,000 鈥 one of the highest for elective surgeries. In Miami-Dade alone, 25 people have died from cosmetic surgeries since 2021, as per the New York Post.Experts warn that fat embolisms 鈥 when fat is accidentally injected into large veins and travels to the heart or lungs 鈥 are a key cause of these deaths.

Some clinics have also faced criticism for high patient turnover, short recovery supervision, and aggressive marketing to young women, particularly women of color.

Who was Wildelis Rosa?

A dedicated officer and Army Reservist with dreams beyond duty

Rosa had recently returned from a deployment to Kuwait as part of the US Army Reserve. Described by her family as driven and full of life, her death has devastated her community and fellow officers.

鈥淪he had dreams and goals. She was supposed to be safe here, not come back from a warzone just to die at home,鈥 her sister said.

What鈥檚 being done?

Calls grow for stricter regulations on cosmetic clinics

Following Rosa鈥檚 death and others like hers, calls for tighter regulations on Florida鈥檚 cosmetic surgery industry are growing. Lawmakers and health advocates are urging:

Mandatory in-person post-op monitoring for at least 48 hoursLimits on number of procedures per day per doctorIncreased inspections of high-volume clinicsTransparency in patient fatality history

Her sister said she wants Rosa鈥檚 death to be a 鈥渃autionary tale鈥 for others considering similar procedures.
