The Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education is set to take a historic step towards digital reform. Starting July 1, students and teachers from Classes 9 to 12 will now mark their attendance online, replacing the traditional register-based system. This new system is being rolled out in approximately 30,000 schools affiliated with the UP Board.
It is being hailed as a significant milestone under the Digital India initiative, particularly in the education sector. UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh stated that the primary aim of this move is to bring transparency and discipline to the education system while also curbing fake enrolments.
Attendance Via Mobile App
According to the Uttar Pradesh Education Department, all schools will now be required to record the attendance of students and teachers through a dedicated online portal and mobile application. Attendance will be marked classroom-wise and section-wise.
This system will also capture reasons for absence, such as illness or personal issues, which must be specified accurately. If this process is neglected, strict action will be taken against the concerned teachers and school staff. The initiative aims to ensure regularity and accountability across schools.
75% Attendance Mandatory
The UP Board has clearly stated that students with less than 75% attendance will not be allowed to appear in board examinations. This rule has been introduced to tackle the issue of fake enrolments and irregular attendance—challenges the board has long been grappling with. The digital system will provide accurate, real-time attendance data to help the education department in monitoring and policymaking.
Enhancing The Education System
Teachers have also been instructed to upload students’ marks via the mobile app, along with a selfie for verification. This digital step is aimed not only at improving attendance but also at enhancing the overall quality of education.
The UP Board believes this initiative will foster greater discipline and technological advancement in the education system. It is expected to boost the accountability of both students and teachers, making the system more transparent, effective and future-ready.
