UK tourists abandon Majorca for 'cheaper' European holiday hotspots

UK travel companies have drastically reduced prices for flights and package holidays to Greece and Turkey following increased tension in the Middle East, leading to another tourism downturn for Majorca with British holidaymakers. At present, the most affordable package from provider TUI is a 拢228 trip to Kavos on the Greek island of Corfu on 13th July. Jet2 Holidays, the largest package provider, is offering week-long stays in Parga, northwest Greece, and Turkish resorts Marmaris and Bodrum for less than 拢300. These special offers are designed to entice those holding out for last-minute deals to make the most of their money in the sun this summer. Read more: Popular city centre restaurant closes suddenly While some locals in Majorca may welcome the decrease in British tourism, it will undoubtedly impact the island’s economy negatively and trigger a further crisis in the hospitality industry. As of 2021, tourism accounted for roughly 45 percent of Majorca’s GDP, providing employment to a significant portion of the island. This development follows warnings to British tourists to reconsider visiting Majorca, with locals voicing concerns over extreme overcrowding in streets, beaches and public spaces, reports the Express . The island’s limited infrastructure has long struggled to accommodate the influx of summer tourists that descend on the Spanish jewel, resulting in a surge of overtourism protests in recent times. This follows the anticipation of tens of thousands of protestors taking to the streets in popular Spanish holiday destinations such as Barcelona, San Sebasti虂an, Granada, Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza in the coming weeks. Demonstrations are also expected in Lisbon, Portugal and parts of Italy including Genoa. The decline in British tourism in Majorca will undoubtedly raise concerns for some. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, cheaper resorts in south-eastern Europe, boasting diverse scenery, have seen a surge in popularity with no signs of slowing down. Travel chiefs in the region will now be contemplating strategies to revive the golden era of British tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean.
