Closing out the UFC 317 early prelims is a late addition to the fight card. That fight pits Sedriques Dumas against UFC newcomer Jackson McVey in a middleweight matchup.

Dumas (10-3) has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since his last fight, a UFC 314 knockout loss to Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC 314. Since then, Dumas was arrested and charged with home invasion, domestic battery, possession of weapon by convicted felon among other charges.

McVey (6-0) comes to the UFC with six pro fights and six finishes. His most recent bout was a first-round knockout under the LFA banner. Each of McVey’s finishes has come in the first round.

Dumas opened as a -150 betting favorite over the +130 McVey. The odds have flipped. Today, McVey is the -154 favorite over the +134 Dumas.

The betting pick is McVey to win via knockout.

In this matchup we have a heavyweight coming off his first pro loss (via a doctor stoppage) in Jhonta Diniz (8-1) against a heavyweight who has a perfect record in Alvin Hines (7-0), who is also making his UFC debut. Diniz is 2-1 in the UFC.

Diniz opened as a massive betting favorite at -850, while Hines was listed at +600. Those odds have moved a great deal. Today, Diniz is -299 to Hines’s +249.

Hines is a short-notice replacement for Justin Tafa.

Diniz is not great on the mat, but he is a good striker with seven knockouts. Hines has grappling chops, but his striking can be sloppy, and that makes this fight dangerous for him.

The betting pick is for Diniz to win via knockout, but there is a chance that Hines could grind out a decision if he can get the fight to the mat.

Opening the UFC 317 early prelims is a welterweight bout between Niko Price (16-8) and Jacobe Smith (10-0). Price, one of the more entertaining fighters on the UFC roster is 1-3 in his past four fights. Smith is 1-0 in the UFC with a first round knockout win in his promotional debut in January. Eight is Smith’s wins have come by knockout.

Smith opened as an enormous favorite at -1600, while Price was +900. Smith is an even bigger favorite now at -1800. Meanwhile Price has remained at +900.

The betting pick is for Smith to use his power to score a knockout win over the fading Price. However, the odds are so lopsided a Price win might be worth taking a small shot.

Ilia Topuria (16-0) is a former Cage Warriors champion. He joined the UFC in 2020 with a 9-0 record. It did not take him long to make a name for himself. He was ranked No. 14 in the featherweight division after three UFC bouts at 145 pounds and one contest in the 155-pound division. Three of those scraps ended with Topuria winning via knockout.

In his first fight as a ranked featherweight, Topuria dispatched Bryce Mitchell via submission in the second round, earned his first “Performance of the Night” bonus and moved to No. 9 in the rankings.

A matchup with No. 5 ranked Josh Emmett followed the Mitchell win. Topuria picked up a decision in a “Fight of the Night” scrap. Topuria’s next fight, saw him face Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 298. Topuria entered that bout as the No. 3 ranked featherweight. He left as the champion after knocking out Volkanovski in the second stanza.

In his first defense of the UFC featherweight crown, Topuria made history, becoming the first fighter to finish former 145-pound champion Max Holloway via strikes, knocking out the ex-champion in the third round of their UFC 308 meeting in October 2024.

When Topuria decided to move to lightweight and give up his featherweight title, he vowed to sit until he got a 155-pound title shot. That fight takes place at UFC 317.

Topuria has a 16-0 record with eight of those wins coming under the UFC banner.

Charles Oliveira (35-10-0-1) has been fighting with the UFC since 2010. He won the vacant lightweight title with his win over Chandler and defended the title once, beating Dustin Poirier. He was booked to face Justin Gaethje in his second title defense, but Oliveira missed weight for that fight, which he won by submission, losing the title on the scale.

Oliveira had a chance to regain the belt in October 2022, but Islam Makhachev submitted him and claimed the vacant belt. Since that loss, Oliveira is 1-1, beating Beneil Dariush by TKO in June 2023 and losing to Arman Tsarukyan via split decision in April of this year.

Oliveira is coming off a November 2024 decision win over Michael Chandler.

Oliveira is the No. 2 fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings.
