Top Mallorca beach trashed - but not by tourists?

Last summer, around 300 people occupied Caló des Moro in Santanyi in protest at beach overcrowding in Mallorca. Organised by the Mallorca Platja Tour social media group, they said at the time: “We want to spend a day at the beach with people from here. To do so we had to come at eight in the morning, otherwise it would have been impossible.”
Well, this week, the magical night of San Juan, which marks the start of summer, turned into a nightmare for residents and tourists after the publication on social media of the accumulation of rubbish in the Caló des Moro. The rubbish piled up next to the path leading to one of the most idyllic spots in Mallorca has generated a multitude of critical comments on social media.
A new example of incivility has put Caló des Moro in the spotlight, this time due to the large amount of rubbish left behind after the night-time celebrations on the eve of San Juan, when many people flock to the coast to enjoy the evening and carry out various rituals to attract good luck.
The hours after the night’s celebrations left a dawn that quickly generated numerous critical comments about the abandonment of rubbish of all kinds. Various posts on social media denounced the situation and received a wave of indignation from residents and neighbours alike, as well as tourists, expressing their discomfort and disappointment at the lack of respect for the environment. And one has to pose the question, who lacked the respect?
Es Caló des Moro has been recognised as one of the best beaches in Europe. The annual report from “The World’s Best Beaches” places Es Caló des Moro in the top three of its prestigious ranking. This accolade highlights the beach’s unique appeal among the planet’s finest coastal destinations.
Described by the organisation as a true “hidden gem,” Es Caló des Moro is praised for its small stretch of sand and crystal-clear waters. Spanning just 40 metres, this beach has become one of the most sought-after virgin beaches by tourists visiting the island, offering a secluded and pristine environment.
