A toddler has died in the back of a car as temperatures soared to 35C outside the vehicle. The tragic incident happened during a sweltering heatwave in Spain as the nation was alerted to numerous health alerts amid the scorthing sun. The boy, reportedly two years old, was left inside his father’s car on an industrial estate in the Costa Dorada town of Valls near the eastern coastal city of Tarragona. At 3pm, when the sun was at its highest point in the sky, local emergency services were called to the scene, with the fire brigade removing the toddler from the vehicle at the time. The father was also at the scene, spotted next to the open car door while responders desperately tried to resuscitate the child. They performed CPR on the tiny child before realising he had suffered cardiac arrest. The child was pronounced dead at the scene after the emergency services acknowledged there was nothing more they could do for him, according to reports from the Daily Star. Following the heartbreaking incident, an investigation was launched on Monday (June 30). It remains unclear whether any arrests related to the incident have been made. It comes after British tourists were issued a warning as heatwaves sweep southern Europe. The risk of wildfires has been reported in multiple areas of Europe already, with Greece and Turkey experiencing disruption due to the flames. High temperatures of over 40C have been recorded, with some experts associating the growing number of the heatwaves to climate change. Over the weekend, parts of Portugal were on high alert for extreme heat and wildfires, as temperatures were expected to reach a sweltering 42C in Lisbon.
