Tommy Doyle is tailor-made for Birmingham City鈥檚 possession game and should give Chris Davies tactical flexibility in next season鈥檚 Championship. The 23-year-old midfielder completed a loan move to Blues from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday to become the club鈥檚 third summer signing, following on from Phil Neumann and James Beadle. Doyle was deemed surplus-to-requirements by Wolves boss Vitor Pereira and Blues swooped in to fend off competition from Championship and Premier League clubs for his signature. 鈥淭hey clearly have aspirations of not just making up the numbers,鈥 Wolves fan Ben Husband, a football editor at The Mirror, told the Keep Right On Podcast. 鈥淚 personally think he will be a very good Championship player. I have reservations over whether he is a good Premier League player yet. 鈥淚t will be interesting how he鈥檚 used at Blues. He never quite nailed down what his role was at Wolves in two seasons, particularly in the second. 鈥淲olves aren鈥檛 a team that are going to have possession, they have a very limited amount of possession. He鈥檚 very good at transitioning from defence into attack, he can really pick out a pass. 鈥淗e鈥檚 got very good technique. The best example was his assist at Brighton last season when he was the man left back at a corner with Wolves losing 2-1, Brighton broke and it was three against one, he intercepted the ball, got it out his feet and got Cunha going the other way to score the equaliser.鈥 Blues already have a top midfield pairing in Paik Seung-ho and Tomoki Iwata but Doyle鈥檚 acquisition gives Davies fresh options. Doyle could partner Iwata in the midfield slots of Blues鈥 4-2-3-1 formation, allowing Paik to move further forward, or Davies could even implement a 4-3-3 shape. What can鈥檛 be ruled out either is Doyle playing as a number 10. He has occasionally filled that role already in his short career. Husband added: 鈥淚 would be interested to see how he played further forward in a team that are going to have more of the ball, like I expect Blues would have in the Championship. He just never really found a role in a counter-attacking team that don鈥檛 have a lot of the ball. 鈥淒oyle has got the ability to be able to thread passes through to players around him. He鈥檚 got a fantastic strike on him, he scored a stunning goal for Wolves at Brentford in his first season. 鈥淚 would personally be surprised if he can鈥檛 find his way into the XI. I think it鈥檚 a really clever signing for a team in the Championship.鈥
