The criminal twins born together and now sharing a prison together

Twins are often thought to have a close bond, even more so than other siblings. But some take this bond to dark places as they commit violent crimes side-by-side. A number of twins, some identical and some fraternal, have been jailed over their crimes across the UK. The list below includes brothers who killed a man over a drug row. Elsewhere, twin women attacked police officers who were trying to detain them. Twin brothers who ‘hunted’ down and shot a rival gang member in the leg have been jailed for life. Gunman James Byrne and his brother Curtis Byrne, who formed a ‘pack’, travelled in convoy on electric bikes before locating their target near a social club and firing six bullets at him. It came after a third defendant, Mason Smith, was hit by a car. Another incident saw a volley of shots fired at a drug dealer in the street. One of the Byrnes later jumped out of a bedroom window when the police visited his mum’s house. All three stood trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life in July last year. The Byrnes were unanimously convicted of the chargesand Smith was cleared of both counts and the lesser offence of wounding with intent. A 45-year-old man from Hedge End was jailed for six years for drugs supply and fraud offences, dating back to 2010. After a five-week trial at Southampton Crown Court, James Alexander Green, of Berrywood Gardens, was found guilty on the following five counts; • Being concerned with the supply of cannabis between Friday 1 January 2010 and Saturday 1 June 2019 • Conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation between Friday, January 1, 2010 and Monday, August 30, 2010 • Transferring criminal property (money) between Monday, 31 May 2010 and Friday, 30 October 2015 • Concealing criminal property (£341,547 in cash, silver ingot and watches) • Possessing class B with intent to supply on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 A second man – a 45-year-old from Surrey – was found guilty of converting criminal property (money) between Monday 31 May 2010 and Friday 30 October 2015 and conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. Paul Green, of Westfield Avenue, Woking, was sentenced to a total of 26 months’ imprisonment. Two violent twin sisters with a history of assaulting the police have each been locked up for 16 months after both of them again launched vicious attacks on officers during nasty confrontations in Leeds. The 19-year-old twins both caused serious problems after they were arrested and the violence they used against police officers included repeatedly kicking out at them. Their bad-tempered antics were so worrying that custody was the only option because neither of them could be rehabilitated in the community, Hull Crown Court heard. Britney Naylor, of Dibsdane, Orchard Park estate, and Bethany Naylor, of Deerhurst Grove, Bransholme, both admitted assaulting police officers as emergency workers. Benjamin Donnell, prosecuting, said that the offences followed a long-running series of previous incidents that escalated into the police being called in. “The police were able to track the defendants to an address in Leeds,” said Mr Donnell. Police turned up on August 2 last year and spoke to a man who told them that the sisters were at the property. They were traced and officers went to where the twins were. Police took hold of Britney Naylor but she started screaming. She was cautioned and arrested. “Britney’s behaviour became violent and aggressive,” said Mr Donnell. “She kicked out multiple times at the police. She was escorted to a police van. She continued to behave aggressively. “At times, it looked as though she was going to spit at them. She was taken to Elland Road police station. She continued to bang her head against the cage. “She was moved into a holding cell but continued to kick out towards officers.” Two identical twins were jailed after they were convicted of the brutal manslaughter of “much loved” and “idolised” father-of-nine Shane Boxall in his own home. The brothers confronted him after they were allegedly “ripped off” by him when they went to his home to buy drugs. They posted £150 through the letterbox but did not receive any drugs. One of the brothers punched Mr Boxall – who also had nine grandchildren – in the head after they forced their way into his home in a bid to get their money back. The other twin encouraged his brother in using violence despite them being warned that half of Mr Boxall’s skull had been removed during a previous operation, Hull Crown Court heard. Kailum Nightingale, of Poplar Grove, off Lorraine Street, Hull, and Kieran Nightingale, of Vermont Crescent, off Beverley Road, Hull, both denied murdering Mr Boxall on April 25. They were cleared of murder after the jury deliberated for just under four hours. The brothers were convicted of manslaughter following a trial in December last year. Kailum Nightingale was jailed for 10 years – because he lashed out with the fatal punch – and Kieran Nightingale was locked up nine years. Two teenagers were jailed after a ‘calm, caring and extraordinary’ sixteen-year-old boy was ‘senselessly’ stabbed to death when a fight after school escalated into murder. Ashraf Habimana, who had not been involved in the initial fight, was with friends in a car park in Luton at about 7pm on September 29 2023, when the two feuding groups of teenagers clashed again. In one of the groups were twin brothers Athif and Althaf Hussaindeen. Athif had been injured in the earlier fight in Runfold Avenue which had broken out at 3.45pm. The row had escalated over social media to the point where several teenagers turned up to face each other now armed with knives. During the subsequent violence, Althaf was captured on CCTV assaulting Ashraf who was then stabbed in back three times by Athif. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later. CCTV also showed Athif stabbing another 16-year-old who survived the attack. The brothers fled the scene but were later arrested and charged with murder. Athif was unanimously found guilty of Ashraf’s murder following a trial in March. He was also convicted of attempted murder, violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. His brother Althaf was found guilty of manslaughter and violent disorder. Athif Hussaindeen received a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 24 years. Althaf Hussaindeen was sentenced to seven years for his involvement.
