'That Sunrise, Earth's Glow': Shubhanshu's Family Reminisces Unforgettable Video Call From Space

Before connecting, the screen flickered for a while鈥揳nd there he was. Suspended mid-air inside the International Space Station (ISS), astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla smiled as Earth slowly rotated behind him. A soft orange glow spilled through a window near his shoulder 鈥 the beginning of a sunrise in space. In a modest living room in Lucknow, his parents, sister, and extended family leaned in, wide-eyed. Their son, brother, and pride of the nation was showing them a view only a handful of humans had ever witnessed through a video call.
The 15-minute satellite video call was far more than a routine check-in. It was a window into the cosmos, a deeply personal tour of life beyond gravity, and a moment the Shukla family will never forget.
鈥榃e Saw the Earth Glow from Space鈥
鈥淭hat sunrise鈥 we鈥檒l never forget it,鈥 said Shuchi Mishra, Shubhanshu鈥檚 sister, still visibly moved. 鈥淛ust as we began talking, bhaiya pointed to the window. And there it was 鈥 the Earth, round and blue, with light slowly spreading over its curve. We couldn鈥檛 believe our eyes.鈥

Floating calmly in zero gravity, tethered with a light belt to the station wall, Shubhanshu welcomed them warmly. He wasn鈥檛 just answering questions 鈥 he was taking them along. 鈥淟ook, this is where I sleep,鈥 he said, panning the camera to a sleeping bag strapped vertically to the wall. 鈥淎nd here鈥檚 our lab 鈥 where we work on experiments.鈥
From Lucknow to Low Earth Orbit
Back in Lucknow, the family gathered tightly around the screen 鈥 parents Shambhu Dayal and Asha Shukla, Shuchi, and a few close relatives. What they saw felt like a dream. 鈥淗e showed us everything,鈥 said his father. 鈥淭he lab, the dining setup, the tools. We asked him how they manage to eat and sleep. He laughed and said, 鈥榃e tie ourselves down with belts; otherwise, we float!鈥欌

鈥淗e even showed us their dining table,鈥 said Shuchi, 鈥渨here everything is stuck down鈥攆ood packets, water pouches, cutlery 鈥 otherwise it all drifts in the air. It was fascinating.鈥
First Days in Space Were Difficult
Shubhanshu didn鈥檛 hide the challenges. 鈥淗e told us the first three days were uncomfortable,鈥 said Asha. 鈥淗e had a heavy head, a constant pressure feeling. But now, he鈥檚 completely adapted. He said it鈥檚 all fine.鈥
The family鈥檚 faces lit up when he smiled and said, 鈥淢ummy, ab sab theek hai. Bas khaane ka taste nahi hai, lekin health ke liye perfect hai.鈥
鈥淗e reassured us that the food may not taste great, but it contains everything they need,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat made me feel better.鈥
鈥楾ime Works Differently There鈥
As the call went on, the family鈥檚 questions kept coming. How do you know it鈥檚 day or night? 鈥淗e said they rely on the light coming through the windows. That鈥檚 their only clue,鈥 said Shuchi. 鈥淭hey follow a strict schedule. He said sometimes they鈥檙e so busy, they forget what time it is.鈥

The most surreal detail? 鈥淗e said sometimes you go to sleep floating near one spot, and wake up somewhere else,鈥 Shambhu recalled with a laugh. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no fixed 鈥榰p鈥 or 鈥榙own鈥 there.鈥
A Tour of Space, Guided by Their Son
鈥淗e really took us into the sky,鈥 said Asha, holding back tears. 鈥淗e showed us every part of his life there 鈥 his workstation, sleeping area, food, even the controls. We didn鈥檛 just talk. We saw his world.鈥

Shubhanshu also updated them on the progress of his mission. Without going into technical specifics, he spoke of experiments underway in the microgravity environment and how his targets were on track. 鈥淗e鈥檚 constantly working,鈥 said Shuchi. 鈥淗e said there鈥檚 barely any free time. Every hour is planned.鈥
鈥榃e Didn鈥檛 Go There 鈥 But We Lived It鈥
As the call neared its end, the family grew quiet, soaking in every word, every frame. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 go to space,鈥 said Shuchi, 鈥渂ut we saw it, truly saw it. That sunrise鈥 that view of the Earth鈥 bhaiya鈥檚 floating figure鈥 it鈥檚 something we鈥檒l carry for the rest of our lives.鈥

For the Shuklas, the moment was intensely personal. But it was also larger than life 鈥 an ordinary family speaking face-to-face with one of their own, now among the stars.
Back on Earth, after the call ended, the family sat in silence. 鈥淲e felt light,鈥 said Asha. 鈥淣ot just because we saw him 鈥 but because we saw how far he鈥檚 gone. And yet, he鈥檚 still our Shubhanshu.鈥
