Tesla Sales Slide 13% As Elon Musk’s Politics And Rival Brands Dent Demand

Tesla has reported a sharp drop in vehicle sales for the last three months, highlighting how CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political stances continue to alienate customers even as competition heats up. The EV giant delivered 384,122 vehicles from April to June, down 13% compared to the same period last year, when it sold nearly 444,000 cars. The decline comes despite hopes that anger over Musk’s outspoken support for former US President Donald Trump and far-right European politicians would fade with time. Instead, rival carmakers have seized the moment to lure Tesla’s customers, especially in Europe where Chinese brand BYD has been gaining ground. In May alone, Tesla’s sales across 30 European countries tumbled 28% while the broader EV market continued to grow, according to industry data. Musk’s political moves have done little to reassure investors. Although Tesla’s shares rose 3.7% in early trading after the latest figures, they dipped more than 5% earlier this week when Trump threatened to use presidential powers to target Musk’s businesses in response to the billionaire’s criticism of a budget bill. Despite the overall decline, sales of Tesla’s core Models 3 and Y came in stronger than expected at 373,728 units, beating analysts’ forecasts. Still, industry experts say the current lineup may have reached its limit. The company is also shifting focus to self-driving technology and robotaxis. It’s currently piloting driverless cabs in Austin, Texas, but regulators are watching closely following incidents caught on video. Tesla’s next earnings report is due July 23, following a tough first quarter where profits plunged 71%. Whether Musk’s recent clash with Trump will help win back disillusioned buyers remains to be seen. (With inputs from PTI)
