KUCHING: Teacher placement in Sarawak has now exceeded 90 per cent, with priority given to critical subjects, especially in rural areas, Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn says.

Speaking to the media after officiating the Gawai Segulai Sejalai Ceremony at i-CATS University College today, Sagah acknowledged that achieving full placement is a continuous challenge due to regular teacher retirements and transfers. However, the needs of students are still given priority.

鈥淚f 100 per cent is indeed difficult, but what is more important is that we have enough teachers for critical subjects, especially in rural areas,鈥 he said, according to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

He added that although vacancies still occur from time to time, overall Sarawak is now at an 鈥渁dequate鈥 level in terms of teacher placement.

鈥淔or now, we can say that it is sufficient,鈥 he explained.

Meanwhile, Sagah highlighted the important role of i-CATS University College as a strategic institution in the success of Sarawak鈥檚 human capital development agenda, in line with the State鈥檚 aspiration to become developed by 2030.

鈥淎s the Minister responsible for education, innovation and talent development, I see i-CATS as a strategic institution.

鈥淭he Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) believes that Sarawak鈥檚 transformation into a developed state by 2030 will not be successful without universities like i-CATS playing a role as the main driver of talent and innovation,鈥 he said.

He added that MEITD not only supports educational institutions from a policy and financial perspective, but is also committed to developing a higher education ecosystem that is inclusive, relevant and rooted in local culture. 鈥 DayakDaily
