Radio presenter Suzanne Kane has opened up about suffering a devastating late miscarriage back in 2019 and how she was supported through it by her beloved husband Joey Donnelly.
Together, Suzanne and Joey share three beautiful children, Oisín, 10, Hannah, eight, and four-year-old Sadie, and in the latest issue of RSVP Magazine, we join the family of five for a fun photoshoot at the Heritage Hotel in Laois, where the couple married in 2013.
Speaking of how they met, Suzanne smiles as she remembers their typical ‘Irish’ beginning: “I met him at my local GAA club, St. Jude’s. Could it be anymore Irish? We started dating and I was very adamant that it wasn’t going to be anything serious.
“Three years later, I was marrying him. But I knew from the first minute there was something different about him. He was everything. I just didn’t want anything else in the world.
“We moved in together after a year and we got engaged in London, married on the 19th of October 2013 – exactly three years after we met – and we had our first baby in 2014. So we didn’t hang around”.
Like any marriage, Suzanne and Joey have been through the highs and lows of life, including baby loss.
“We’ve been through all of the incredible highs of life, and we’ve had some really low heartbreak moments in our 15 years together. But he’s just so solid, unwaveringly so. We had miscarriages and we lost a baby late enough [in the pregnancy] back in December 2019. I remember waking up from the operation and he was there, he told me everything’s going to be okay.
“I remember the overwhelming sadness that both of us had. He would just say, ‘We’ll figure it out. We always do’. That has been our mantra for our entire relationship. I’d be lost without him. He fixes cars so he’s often the first person people ring if they get into an accident and his first question is always, ‘are you OK? Are you injured?’. I’m so incredibly in love with him, but I also like him a lot. I like hanging around with him.
“We’re human of course and we have the same arguments as everybody else. When we did our marriage course, we learned our fighting style. Mine was an ostrich – I bury my head in the sand and Joey was tackling it head-on. But look, 15 years later, we’re here”.
