In 2025, David Corenswet dons the cape and big red S of the last son of Krypton for James Gunn’s big-screen reimagining of the adventures of Superman. Still, for all the whizbang modern movie technology in the world, it’s hard to beat the classic 1978 movie that inspired Gunn and co.

For generations of moviegoers and despite various attempts to reboot the character on screen, Christopher Reeve simply WAS Superman, perfect as both the heroic man of steel and as his bumbling alter ego Clark Kent.

Watching him team up with Margot Kidder’s feisty Lois Lane to face off against Gene Hackman’s playfully evil Lex Luther in order to save California remains an undimmed treat. Great names including Marlon Brando and Glenn Ford to Ned Beatty and Jackie Cooper help fill out a fantastic cast, and John Williams’ goosebump-raising score is simply perfection. As the first notes of that theme ring out, you really will believe a man can fly. (143 minutes)
