State pensioners with back pain are set to be handed £5,292 from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ). State pensioners can benefit from Attendance Allowance, which will hand state pensioners with £110.40 a week or £441 a month or over £5,200 a year. 74,804 people over 66 are claiming support for back pain. You can get Attendance Allowance if you’ve reached State Pension age and you have a physical disability (including sensory disability, for example blindness), a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or a health condition. You can also get it if your disability or health condition is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself or someone to supervise you, for your own or someone else’s safety OR if you have needed that help for at least six months. It usually improves within a few weeks but can sometimes last longer or keep coming back. There are things you can do to help ease the pain. “Back pain can have many causes. It’s not always obvious what causes it, and it often gets better on its own. A common cause of back pain is an injury like a pulled muscle (strain). “Sometimes, medical conditions like a slipped disc, sciatica (a trapped nerve) or ankylosing spondylitis can cause back pain. Very rarely, back pain can be a sign of a serious problem such as a broken bone, cancer or an infection.” It says back pain often improves on its own within a few weeks. The NHS says stay active and try to continue with your daily activities and take anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen – paracetamol on its own is not recommended for back pain but it may be used with another painkiller. It says use an ice pack (or bag of frozen peas) wrapped in a tea towel to reduce pain and swelling and use a heat pack (or hot water bottle) wrapped in a tea towel to relieve joint stiffness or muscle spasms. It also urges people affected to try doing some exercises and stretches for back pain.
