Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about how launching her music career later than most artists became one of her greatest blessings.
Speaking in a candid interview with Nigerian media personality Joey Akan on Afrobeats Intelligence, Tiwa reflected on her journey through the music industry, her experience with motherhood, and the mental health challenges that many artists quietly face.
“I was very intentional about sustaining my career. Me starting at a late age was a blessing,” Tiwa said. “At the time, I didn’t think it was though, but now looking back, I realize how much it helped shape me.”
Tiwa, known for chart-topping hits across Africa and beyond, explained how maturity and life experience allowed her to handle fame and business decisions better than she might have if she had started younger.
On motherhood, the songstress shared her thoughts about her son possibly pursuing a music career. She emphasized that she doesn’t want him to feel pressured just because of her legacy.
“I’ve seen a lot of kids whose parents are amazing singers and musicians. They learned, but they don’t have that natural gift,” Tiwa said. “So I didn’t want my son to feel pressured going into music because of me. If music is truly his path, he’ll find it in spite of me. And when he does, then I’ll support him fully. But it has to be his choice.”
Tiwa also spoke frankly about the mental and emotional challenges artists face behind the glamorous public image.
“It’s difficult for artists mentally. Imagine being an artist and you’re not making as much money as people think you are, but you have to live like you are,” she explained. “To build that larger-than-life image, you have to appear to have money even when you don’t. And it’s not consistent.”
She highlighted the pressure of constant public scrutiny, saying, “You are open for public perception and opinion. From the beginning, you either need to be very thick-skinned, or you learn to grow it over the years.”
Tiwa’s honest and vulnerable insights come as a refreshing reminder that behind the fame and success, artists also face real-life battles, just like everyone else.
