Spike in heart attack deaths in Hassan sparks probe and vaccine questions

In a troubling turn of events, Karnataka’s Hassan district has reported 23 deaths from heart attacks over the past 40 days, prompting state officials to take swift action. Many of the deceased were young or middle-aged, including four teenagers and a 27-year-old carpenter who died most recently.

The surge in cardiac fatalities has caused an 8% jump in patients visiting Bengaluru’s Jayadeva Hospital, most of them from Hassan and its surroundings. Records from the district health office indicate 507 heart attack cases in the last two years, with 190 resulting in fatalities.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has set up a panel led by Dr Ravindranath from Jayadeva Institute to investigate the cause. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within ten days. The CM also raised concerns over a potential link between the sudden deaths and the Covid vaccine, citing global research suggesting a possible correlation.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao urged the public not to panic and stated that the matter was under serious review. He assured that the expert panel would look into any patterns across Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry dismissed claims that Covid vaccines are behind these deaths. Backed by findings from ICMR and NCDC, the ministry stated that vaccines used in India are safe and that multiple risk factors like genetics, lifestyle, and post-Covid issues could be responsible for cardiac deaths.

The final word awaits the panel’s detailed investigation.
