'So Cringe': Karan Johar Writes Poem For Ranveer Singh On His Birthday, Fans Say ‘It’s Giving ChatGPT’

As Ranveer Singh turned 40, director Karan Johar marked the milestone with a poetic tribute on Instagram that celebrated everything from Ranveer’s wild fashion to his heartfelt love for wife Deepika Padukone. But while the sentiment was clear, the reactions were sharply divided.
Many social media users felt the long note was “cringe” and over-the-top, with some even saying that writing an entire poem for a birthday post gave off strong “Boomer energy” — a term that, according to the Urban Dictionary, refers to anything that tries to be deep, emotional, or cool but ends up sounding outdated, extra, or unintentionally funny.
Several fans also joked that the photos used in the post looked like they were “randomly googled,” and questioned the effort behind the birthday wish. Yet, beyond the jokes and trolling, many fans also acknowledged that Karan Johar genuinely adores Ranveer Singh — who starred in his last directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, a massive box office success.

Karan Johar has long expressed his love for Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh faced significant criticism after their joint appearance on Koffee with Karan in 2023. During the highly discussed episode, the couple shared insights into their love story, with Deepika revealing that they had been in an “open relationship for a period.” This led to a wave of backlash from social media users. In a recent interview, Koffee with Karan host and filmmaker Karan Johar defended the couple, calling them a “solid pair.”
During an appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast, the 52-year-old director said, “I think they spoke from their heart. I thought they were honest. I think (the backlash) was ridiculous, I’m sorry. I don’t agree with the reaction. They were beautiful. They were honest. They were earnest. They were sincere. They were deeply in love with each other. They’re a wonderful couple, and I’ve known them personally. Now they have a gorgeous daughter. Respect their love story, don’t judge it. That’s all I have to say.”

On the work front, Ranveer Singh was last seen in a lead role in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023. Next, he reprised his role as Simmba in Rohit Shetty’s 2024 film, Singham Again. Next in line for him is Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandar.
