‘Significant delay’ at Yarmouth races as horse needs to be sedated after starting stalls incident

THERE is a ‘significant delay’ at Yarmouth races after a nasty incident in the starting stalls.

Just before the second race at 2.30, the Marco Botti-trained two-year-old filly Blue Mountains was withdrawn after getting upset entering the stalls.

She required veterinary attention but attempts to load her into the horse ambulance failed.

It was initially thought that meant she was having to be walked back up the track from the six furlong start.

But a further update explained she actually needed to be sedated to calm down enough to go into the horse ambulance.

The runners for the next race, scheduled for 3pm, were removed from the parade ring as a precaution.

Vanessa Ryle, who was at the track for Sky Sports Racing, said there was a ‘significant delay’.

Clerk of the Course Richard Aldous said: “We went to load the horse but she wouldn’t – she now needs to be sedated to load onto the horse ambulance.

“We did not want to walk her back as it’s a welfare issue and we have to be wary of any potential injuries.

“We’re having a few problems getting her onto the horse ambulance.

“As soon as she is back, we’ll get her into the stable, looked at, and get the rest of the racing on.”

A BHA statement read: “There will be a slight delay to Race 3 @GTYarmouthRaces. Update to follow.”

The 2.30 contest, a Class 5 maiden for fillies, was off two minutes late.

It was won by 33-1 outsider Khuskhas for jockey Daniel Muscutt and trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy.

Blue Mountains, who was set to make her debut, was an 11-1 chance prior to being withdrawn.

At 3.24pm Blue Mountains had finally made her way back to the racecourse stables.

That meant the five runners for the 3pm race, a Class 6 1m6f handicap for three-year-olds rated 0-60, could make their way into the parade ring.

It was gone 3.30pm by the time the runners exited the ring and made their way down to the start – and 3.34pm was the official off time.

The BHA later confirmed every future race time for the remainder of the card was pushed back by 30 minutes.
