Shashi Warrier | What鈥檚 The Donald Good For: Nobel or Guinness?

When Murthy turned up on my doorstep on an evening in the middle of June, I was taken aback, for I hadn鈥檛 opened a bottle of his favourite Scotch. I was even more surprised when he announced that he was off liquor for the time being. 鈥淭here鈥檚 been a death in the family,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd I mustn鈥檛 drink until the rituals are over, which will be in 10 days.鈥 鈥淩ight,鈥 I said, leading him into the sitting room wondering what I could offer him. 鈥淧rita鈥檚 gone shopping so I can鈥檛 offer you much…鈥 鈥淚鈥檝e not given up tea yet,鈥 he said as he sat down, as if reading my mind. As I turned to go to the kitchen, the doorbell rang again, and, this time, there were Kala and Kapil smiling on the doorstep. They had been our neighbours for several years until we moved into our present house, and were on their way back home from a nearby temple. Both are professionals, and 鈥攗nlike me 鈥 keep abreast of world events, especially after their daughter went off to Australia to do a degree in management. After they had all sipped their tea and lied about it being satisfactory, the talk died down because all of them would have preferred a livelier drink. All the same, the conversation woke up when it turned to conflicts around the world, and then to Pakistan. 鈥淭his Field Marshal Munir is despicable!鈥 said Kala,. 鈥淗e鈥檚 willing to bend over backwards to get Trump a Nobel! And Trump, of course, is willing to sell his country for flattery and expensive 鈥榞ifts鈥! So now they鈥檙e in bed together and don鈥檛 care if the rest of the world goes up in flames because of them.鈥 鈥淟ook at it from Munir鈥檚 point of view,鈥 said Kapil reasonably. 鈥淎merica鈥檚 been in bed with the Pakistanis, off and on, since the 1950s. They created the Pakistani military establishment. They gave them advanced weapons. They created and fed the Afghan Taliban as long as the Soviets were in Afghanistan. Then, for a decade, they ignored them until Musharraf joined Bush in the war on terror. 鈥淏ut then the Pakistanis got into bed with the Chinese. Their weaponry, which was mostly American, became four fifth Chinese. That doesn鈥檛 sit well with the Americans. And now the Pakistanis have discovered, in the course of Operation Sindoor, that Chinese weapons aren鈥檛 so great, after all. So they鈥檙e trying to rebuild the bridge with the Americans. The easiest way to do that is to flatter Trump.鈥 鈥淭he point being?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淭he point being that the Americans created the environment in which Pakistan became what it is,鈥 replied Kapil. 鈥淭he point is also that Trump represents post-WWII America better than any other president they鈥檝e had recently. Greedy, obnoxious, and without conscience. Look how he took that $400 million plane from the Qataris.鈥 鈥淎re you saying that Trump is worse than Munir?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a matter of better or worse,鈥 replied Kapil. 鈥淭rump is more dangerous. Munir is just a tool. Trump is the man paying for Munir鈥檚 services.鈥 鈥淲hat do you mean dangerous?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淗e鈥檚 causing upheavals around the world,鈥 said Kapil. 鈥淢ore deaths鈥 Just like his predecessors.鈥 鈥淚 thought Obama was less dangerous!鈥 said Kala.鈥 鈥淚 think he was worse,鈥 said Kapil. 鈥淗e鈥檚 charming, but a snake. Trump is a toad that likes to flaunt its warts. It鈥檚 difficult to choose between the two.鈥 鈥淲hat about Obama鈥檚 Nobel?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淒idn鈥檛 he deserve it?鈥 鈥淣ot if you count the war dead during his terms,鈥 said Kapil, 鈥渙r the deportations. So the Nobel鈥檚 already been cheapened. Giving it to Trump won鈥檛 cheapen it much further.鈥 鈥淏ut I don鈥檛 understand!鈥 Kala said. 鈥淭he Pakistanis are in bed with the Chinese, and with the Americans, but the Chinese and the Americans are enemies. The Pakistanis and Iranians are friends, but the Americans just bombed the Iranians with the largest bombs ever used. So how does that work?鈥 鈥淓asily,鈥 replied Kapil. 鈥淓veryone鈥檚 pretending. The Pakistanis are backstabbing everyone, which they鈥檝e been doing ever since 1947. The Americans have become great at backstabbing their allies: Kissinger himself said that America has no friends or enemies, only interests. The Iranians will swallow their pride as long as they can live to nuke Israel another day. The Chinese want to go back to being the world鈥檚 manufacturing hub and get rich quick. 鈥淏ut all this aside, there鈥檚 one thing most of them agree upon.鈥 鈥淲hat鈥檚 that?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淣one of them likes the idea of a powerful India,鈥 replied Kapil. 鈥淧akistan for obvious reasons. China because it doesn鈥檛 like competition. America sees India as a threat a decade into the future, and, besides, isn鈥檛 sure of India鈥檚 military abilities. So they鈥檝e all got a common aim, and they鈥檝e roped in Bangladesh in as well.鈥 鈥淪o where is it all going to end?鈥 asked Kala. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e all opportunistic, expert backstabbers, toadies, and bullies,鈥 said Kapil. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e all transactional, except the Chinese. With any …
