The holy month of Sawan is round the corner. Many devotees of lord Shiva wait for this month. It is considered highly auspicious. This year, the Sawan month will begin from July 11 and conclude on August 9. It is also known as the month of Shravan Maas. This monthy typically is observed in either in the month of July or August, depending on the lunar calendar. There’s a beautiful story that explains why we pray to lord Shiva during this month. So, it is believed that during this month, Shiva drank the deadly poison (Halahala) that emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). To reduce the impact of the poison, devotees offer water, milk, and bel leaves to the Shivling, praying for health, prosperity, and peace. From keeping fast, chanting ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ to praying to lord Shiva, Sawan month is a promising one indeed. You must have also heard that one must offer water and other things to Shivlinga during this month to invite blessings of the lord. Well, there are some rules that one must bear in mind when doing so. They are listed below. Always face north..It is said that one must not face the Shivling south or east when offering jal. Instead, one must face north, as it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Use proper vessel.. When offering jal to the linga, you must factor in the type of vessel also. One must never use a steel or iron vessel to hold the water, as they are considered inauspicious metals. Instead, one must choose a silver, bronze, or silver vessel. When offering water to lord Shiva, never use a conch shell, as it is believed to be a symbol of Lord Vishnu. Never stand straight… One must sit down or bow down when offering water on the linga. One must never pour water on the Shivling while standing straight. It is considered as a sign of disrespect. No torn bel leaves Do not offer torn or damaged bel leaves to Lord Shiva. The bel tree is considered to be the abode of several goddesses, including Parvati and Maheshwari.
