The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has expressed concern over the recent spate of road accidents. According to the authority, road crash fatalities have reached a record high, highlighting the urgent need for action to address the situation.
Public Relations Officer for the NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, voiced alarm that almost every week, a road crash is recorded somewhere across the country.
“Currently, there is no week without a road accident being recorded. This is a troubling trend we must address,” she said.
She noted that the NRSA has implemented several measures aimed at preventing or minimising road crashes, in collaboration with stakeholders—particularly drivers.
Madam Sateckla also mentioned that the NRSA has established road safety committees within various district assemblies as part of its efforts to intensify education and promote road safety.
However, she pointed out that delays in the release of funds are hampering the consistency of the Arrive Alive campaign, emphasising the need for timely financial support from the relevant authorities.
“Releasing the funds will certainly enable us to continue the campaign and help reduce road crashes,” she added.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she also provided an update on the number of casualties recorded from the beginning of the year to date, saying that compared to last year, the number of deaths recorded so far is alarming.
“The available data shows that the number of accidents between January and May has increased compared to the same period last year. The reported cases of accidents, along with the resulting casualties, injuries, and damages, are alarming and on the rise.From January to May 2024, 5,609 crashes were reported. This figure increased to 6,111 during the same period in 2025, representing an 8.9% rise.The number of vehicles involved in accidents rose from 9,553 in 2024 to 10,378 in 2025, marking an 8.5% increase.Regarding fatalities, 1,066 deaths were recorded between January and May 2024. This number rose to 1,267 during the same period in 2025—an 18.9% increase, with over 200 additional deaths.Injuries also increased significantly—from 6,333 in 2024 to 7,011 in 2025—resulting in over 700 more injuries.The rate at which accidents are increasing is deeply concerning, and we must address it urgently to protect the lives of Ghanaians.”
She called on the media and other stakeholders to support the NRSA in raising awareness and reducing road crashes.
