Recent outstanding NGSA performances are signs that the education system is evolving in the right direction

Dear Editor,

As a returning national who had the opportunity to pursue my education abroad, it brings me immense pride and joy to witness the Guyanese education system operating at such a high level. The recent outstanding performances by many of our youth at the national level are a testament to the remarkable progress being made. However, it is important to acknowledge the growing concerns surrounding school feeding programmes. Numerous parents and guardians have expressed dissatisfaction, citing that the meals provided are at times insufficient in quantity or lacking in nutritional value.

As a communications analyst, I respectfully urge the relevant authorities to prioritize greater transparency and accountability within this initiative. Doing so would help counter misinformation, rebuild public trust, and ensure that the resources allocated to this essential programme are being used effectively. Personally, I benefited from similar school meal programmes in Barbados during my primary and secondary school years鈥攑rogrammes so well-managed that even teachers participated in the meals. Guyana is on the right path by offering this vital support to our children, and this programme must be protected and strengthened.

The transformational benefits of a well-managed school meals initiative cannot be overstated. Beyond addressing hunger, it enhances classroom focus, improves academic outcomes, and increases school attendance鈥攑articularly in vulnerable communities. The progress made in recent years is truly commendable. It is heartening to witness the collective efforts of educators, administrators, and policymakers shaping not only the minds of our youth but also of adults seeking to improve themselves. While there remains room for innovation and development, the strides taken in curriculum reform, expanded access to learning resources, and the integration of technology鈥攆rom primary education to university and vocational training鈥攁re all signs of a system evolving in the right direction. Let us continue to build on this great momentum, keeping education at the heart of Guyana鈥檚 national development.

Sincerely,

Blane R. Bunbury
