Qatar Airways has issued an update on its flight operations after Qatar鈥檚 airspace reopened following a closure in anticipation of Iranian attacks on a US air base near Doha on Monday. The airspace was closed for around eight hours from Monday evening to just after midnight on Tuesday local time. According to Qatari and US officials nearly all the missiles were intercepted. In a statement published on its website, Qatar Airways said that they “anticipate significant delays鈥 to their flight schedule. They had previously issued a statement when the airspace was closed. The airline said: 鈥淔urther to our earlier statement, Qatar Airways confirms the re-opening of airspace in the State of Qatar. 鈥淲e are working closely with government stakeholders and the relevant authorities to support any passengers that have been impacted, and will resume operations as quickly as possible. 鈥淎s usual operations resume, we anticipate significant delays to our flight schedule. We would advise passengers to check qatarairways.com or the Qatar Airways mobile application ahead of travel. “The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority.鈥 According to the Independent, Doha is the second biggest international hub airport in the Gulf after Dubai, with more than 120,000 passengers passing through it every day. The publication reports that flights were diverted to a range of destinations during the airspace closure, ranging from Abu Dhabi and Bahrain to Istanbul and Cairo. It warned that it 鈥渨ill take days to clear the backlog鈥 of diverted flights. On June 22, Qatar Airways announced that it would be “rescheduling a number of flights in the coming weeks鈥 following the US missile strike on Iran on Sunday. In a statement issued on their website, the airline said: 鈥淭o ensure connectivity and minimise disruption, Qatar Airways has rescheduled a number of flights over the coming weeks in order to preserve the integrity, reliability and resilience of the airline’s global network.
