Retired miners got together to proudly display the new banner for their branch in North Lanarkshire. Moodiesburn and District Retired Miners’ Branch gathered at Auchengeich Memorial Garden recently to celebrate the new banner, which was produced by ex-miners and their families with a development grant from the Museums Galleries Scotland鈥檚 Community Catalyst Fund as part of their Delivering Change Programme. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Esm茅e Fairbairn Foundation and the Scottish Government, the programme supports museums and galleries across Scotland to make changes to help all people access culture, recognising that museums have played a part in excluding the experiences and histories of many of Scotland鈥檚 people and communities. Northern Corridor Community Volunteers (NCCV) applied to be part of the programme which supports community organisations with lived experience of systemic exclusion to work in partnership with museums. Working with ex-miners and their families, their goal is to have the voice and lived experience of mining communities – particularly those who lived through the 1980s, the strike and the pit closures – reflected in heritage offerings. The project is working with the retired miners and local charity Cardowan Community Meadow and hopes to partner with local museums for further joint working over the next 18 months. Claire Williams, NCCV funding officer, said: 鈥淪o far the programme has enabled us to bring local groups together to look at the current heritage offerings and think about the changes we want to see, this development phase has enabled a much needed banners project, giving the retired miners a banner they can be proud of, and working towards a replacement banner for Cardowan Colliery as theirs was sadly destroyed in a fire. 鈥淭he story of the creation of the memorial garden, the men behind it and their efforts in holding an annual memorial service, which is so important to the community locally, and the continued fight for worker protections, is one which deserves recognition, and we hope the next steps in the project will see that become a reality.鈥 *Don’t miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
