‘Pornography Is Being Served’: MP DGP Links Rise in Rape Cases to Internet, Mobile Use, Moral Decline

Addressing reporters after a review meeting in Ujjain on Saturday, Makwana stressed the role of eroding social and moral structures, saying, “The way pornography is being served on the internet, the minds of children are getting distorted. Police alone can’t deal with this.”

Citing lack of supervision at home, Makwana added, “Children earlier listened to teachers and elders, but today, no one keeps an eye even within the family. Now all limits are breaking.”

The DGP’s comments come amid national outrage over the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata, which has reignited the debate on women’s safety and societal accountability.

Makwana also pointed to data from the Madhya Pradesh home department, which reported over 7,290 rape cases in 2024, averaging nearly 20 cases a day. This reflects a 19% increase from 2020, when 6,134 rape cases were reported.

Reiterating the broader societal challenge, he warned that the unchecked spread of obscene content online is corrupting young minds, and urged for collective efforts beyond policing, including stronger parenting, education, and digital content regulation, to tackle the issue at its roots.
