Poetic to see GOAL critics with certificates in hand

Dear Editor,
GUYANA stands at the threshold of a historic transformation. One that transcends the riches of oil and gas, and ventures boldly into the sustainable domain of human capital development.
At the forefront of this movement is the PPP Government鈥檚 Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) scholarship programme, which was an ambitious and strategic national investment that is steadily shifting the country towards a knowledge and skills-based economy.
Since its inception, GOAL has democratised access to tertiary and vocational education by offering fully funded scholarships to citizens from every village across Guyana.
This initiative is a purposeful policy intervention that aligns seamlessly with Guyana鈥檚 commitment to achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Four (Quality Education), SDG Eight (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
A closer look at the evolving social and economic landscape of Guyana would reveal that GOAL is both closing the education gap and actively creating pathways to upward mobility for thousands of citizens from all walks of life.
The training of engineers, teachers, data analysts, and agro-processors among countless other disciplines, represents a long-overdue investment in our most precious national asset: our people.
What I find particularly noteworthy, and perhaps poetic, is the visible shift in public perception. The very individuals and voices who once sought to discredit the programme by labelling it political and ineffective, are now among the many proudly posting their graduation photos on social media, certificates in hand and expressions of gratitude on their lips.
This irony is not a cause for derision but a moment for national reflection. It underscores the idea that genuine development transcends partisan boundaries and that the benefits of sound, visionary policies eventually speak for themselves.
The GOAL programme, which has doubled its initial target of 20,000, is a calculated leap towards a future where the economic engine of Guyana is powered as much by intellectual and technical capital as it is by natural resources.
It is also a reminder that for countries like ours, where the risk of the 鈥渞esource curse鈥 looms large, education is not optional, it is essential for equity, sustainability, and long-term prosperity.
As Guyana continues to position itself as a regional leader in sustainable development, we must recognise that the GOAL scholarship programme is not only an education policy, it is also part of a national development strategy.
It, therefore, shouldn鈥檛 be difficult for us to collectively commend the government for its foresight and urge continued support, expansion, and enhancement of this transformative initiative.
Yours respectfully,
Ravin Singh
