Peter Rufai: Family reveal the cause of ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper's聽death

Peter Rufai鈥檚 family has released an official statement on his passing

The family of the late legendary Nigerian goalkeeper, Prince Peter 鈥淒odo Mayana鈥 Rufai, has released an official statement confirming his death and expressing gratitude to Nigerians and the global football community for the outpouring of love and condolences.

The statement, signed by 11 members of the Rufai family, disclosed that the former Super Eagles shot-stopper passed away peacefully at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a brief illness. He was aged 61.

鈥淲ith total submission to the will of Almighty God, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the transition to glory of our father and brother, the legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, PRINCE PETER 鈥楧ODO MAYANA鈥 RUFAI,鈥 the family wrote.

鈥淒espite our shock and sadness at his rather sudden demise, we are indeed extremely grateful to God Almighty for the impactful life that he granted Prince Peter Rufai through a very successful football career that made him world-famous.鈥

The family highlighted Rufai鈥檚 journey from humble beginnings with Sharks FC of Port Harcourt in the late 1970s to becoming Nigeria鈥檚 first-ever FIFA World Cup goalkeeper, representing the country at both USA ’94 and France ’98.

He also featured in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, playing a crucial role in Nigeria鈥檚 historic 1994 AFCON triumph in Tunisia. Across his international career, he earned 66 caps and even scored one goal, a rare feat for a goalkeeper.

Peter Rufai’s club career spanned multiple countries, Benin Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, where he became known for his composure, agility, and leadership on the pitch.

Following his retirement, Rufai remained active in sports development. He founded Staruf Sports Development Limited, which focused on grassroots sports and youth development, a passion he continued until his final days.

鈥淗e finally returned home to Nigeria after his retirement鈥 That was his full-time engagement until he was called home by his Lord,鈥 the statement read.

The Rufai family extended their heartfelt appreciation to fans, former teammates, friends, and the wider Nigerian community for their messages of condolence and support.
