Parents protest teacher shortage, boycott classes at Konanur school

In Konanur village of Nanjangud taluk鈥攑art of CM Siddaramaiah鈥檚 Varuna constituency鈥攑arents and School Development Committee members staged an unexpected protest on Thursday, demanding more teachers and the reversal of a recent transfer.

Over 120 students are enrolled at the Government Higher Primary School, but only three teachers remain after English teacher Anil was relocated. Parents argued that the shortage, along with a vacant head teacher post, would severely disrupt children鈥檚 learning.

Gathering at the school entrance, parents closed the gates, kept their children home, and shouted slogans against the Education Department. Protesters insisted that Anil鈥檚 transfer be canceled within three to four days and additional teachers be appointed immediately. They warned that if authorities failed to respond, they would escalate the agitation alongside local residents.

School Development Committee President K.S. Basavanna and Vice President K.M. Basavanna led the demonstration, joined by State Coconut Growers Association President Vishwanath and numerous parents, committee members, and villagers.

Participants emphasized that the chronic shortage of educators undermines the quality of education in government schools. They urged the department to take swift action to ensure students are not deprived of essential instruction, particularly in English.

The protesters made it clear that if their demands are ignored, a larger movement will be launched to press for urgent reforms.
