Southampton striker Paul Onuachu returns to Trabzonspor after a challenging Premier League spell, following a successful loan where he scored 17 goals in 25 appearances.
Southampton have agreed the permanent transfer of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu to Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor, ending his two-and-a-half-year stay at St Mary’s Stadium.
The 31-year-old forward, who joined Southampton from Genk in February 2023 for around €21 million, struggled to make a significant impact in the Premier League, scoring just four goals in 40 appearances.
Onuachu’s Return to Familiar Grounds
Onuachu spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Trabzonspor, where he rediscovered his form by netting 15 goals in 21 league appearances.
His successful loan spell convinced the Turkish club to secure his services permanently, per the Athletic.
He will now reunite with compatriot Anthony Nwakaeme as he looks to build on his impressive performances in Turkey.
Difficult Premier League Spell and Super Eagles Career
Despite his towering presence and goal-scoring records in Belgium and Turkey, Onuachu found it challenging to replicate that form in England.
Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022-23 season coincided with a disappointing campaign for the striker.
Internationally, Onuachu has also struggled to make an impact for Nigeria since his debut in 2019, scoring three goals and missing out on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad that finished as runners-up.
The move back to Trabzonspor offers Onuachu a chance to revive his club career in a familiar environment, while Southampton look to rebuild following their drop to the Championship.
Meanwhile, as Onuachu returns home to Turkey, compatriot Victor Osimhen is expected to leave giants Galatasaray, where he made a big impact.
Osimhen, currently on holiday in Nigeria, led the Lions to a historic domestic double, scoring 37 goals and eight assists across competitions.
Despite his impact and the emotional connection, he has struck with the club and fans, the 26-year-old is unlikely to remain with the Turkish champions next season after new suitors emerged.
