Off-Duty Armed Police Presence Grows in Cyprus Amid Security Concerns

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A growing number of police officers in Cyprus are reportedly authorized to carry firearms off duty, following a directive that came into effect on August 1, 2024.

According to local reports, the number of officers permitted to carry weapons around the clock now reaches into the hundreds.

The policy allows officers to carry revolvers or pistols outside working hours, with provisions for other types of firearms in cases involving serious personal security risks. These permissions are granted based on recommendations and approvals from commanding officers, without requiring Cabinet-level authorization.

In addition to police personnel, approximately 30 private individuals are also licensed to carry weapons for personal protection under a separate Council of Ministers decision.

The majority of off-duty carry permits are reportedly held by officers assigned to sensitive units or those deemed at risk due to the nature of their duties.
