Odisha sees sharp rise in vegetable prices after floods ruin farmlands

The incessant rainfall across various parts of Odisha has caused a sharp spike in vegetable prices leaving consumers burdened and farmers distressed. The continuous downpour not only flooded agricultural fields but also marooned several villages across the state.
This has led to a steep rise in prices of essential vegetables in the markets across Odisha.
Vendors and traders in Bhubaneswar and other urban centres report that prices of commonly consumed vegetables such as brinjal ridge gourd beans and tomatoes have almost doubled over the past week.
Retail rates for some items have surged to Rs 120ndashRs 140 per kg depending on the locality and freshness of stock.
While beans are currently selling at around Rs 140 per kg a sharp rise from Rs 100 just a week ago the cost of spine gourd has also doubled climbing from Rs 60 to Rs 120 per kg.
Drumsticks have become more expensive too now priced at Rs 120 up from Rs 100 earlier. Other staples like brinjal ridge gourd pointed gourd and cucumber have also witnessed steep hikes with prices hovering around Rs 80 per kg.
Transport disruptions and damage to standing crops in low-lying farmland have worsened the situation. Local farmers say their produce ready for harvest has either been submerged or washed away. Traders are finding it difficult to source fresh vegetables from regular supply points leading to reduced availability and inflated rates.
Vendors admit they are unable to offer any relief to buyers as wholesale prices have jumped significantly. Many consumers especially daily wage workers and low-income households are cutting down on purchases or switching to cheaper alternatives.
No comments from concerned official over the sudden price rise of essential vegetable could be obtained.
