National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has urged registered voters in Namwera, Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi to uphold their democratic rights and vote on September 16 2025.
Speaking on Saturday during a community mobilisation meeting, Mangochi Nice programme officer Joseph Chamambala emphasised that voting is essential for protecting and sustaining the democracy ushered in through the 1993 referendum.
He warned that boycotting elections could result in voter apathy.
Said Chamambala: 鈥淲e ask people who registered to ensure that they guard jealously their voting cards and come out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice.
鈥淲e want the forthcoming elections to be highly patronised.鈥
He also called on traditional leaders to create equal space for all political parties and candidates to hold rallies.
In his remarks, group village head Namwera commended Nice Trust for delivering timely and motivating election messages.
鈥淭hese messages have not only enlightened us on key issues about the upcoming elections but also encouraged us to develop an appetite for voting,鈥 he said.
The chief also pledged to accommodate all political parties and candidates during the coming campaign period.
Elise Mautuka, an eligible voter from the area, said she was motivated to participate in the elections.
鈥淚 was reluctant to vote on September 16 but after the awareness meeting, I have the energy to vote,鈥 she said.
Mautuka, however, asked political parties and candidates to advance an issue-based campaign to prevent violence.
鈥淢angochi is a political hotspot, therefore, we need politicians to avoid castigating their contenders to promote peace,鈥 she said.
Nice Trust held the awareness meeting with funding from the European Union under the Boma Lathu Project.
Malawi is heading to the polls in September to elect a President, members of Parliament and ward councillors.
