Authorities in Peshawar have announced the suspension of mobile phone services on the 9th and 10th of Muharram as part of heightened security measures during Ashura processions. The move aims to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during the sensitive days of mourning.
According to a police spokesperson, cellular services will be shut down starting Friday, the 8th of Muharram, shortly after Jum’ah prayers. Services are expected to resume on Sunday night after 10 PM, once Ashura-related activities conclude across the city.
The decision comes as law enforcement agencies tighten security to safeguard religious gatherings. Officials confirmed that the suspension will help in maintaining better control and monitoring of the environment, particularly in areas considered high-risk.
In addition to the mobile service suspension, authorities plan to deploy drone cameras, CCTV systems, and advanced surveillance tools to monitor Ashura processions. Security forces will remain on high alert to respond quickly to any emergencies or threats.
Moreover, police have issued guidelines for procession routes and are coordinating with local religious leaders to ensure smooth and peaceful observance. Volunteers will also assist in managing crowds and helping security personnel maintain order.
This proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to preserving peace and religious harmony. However, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and cooperate fully with law enforcement during the Ashura period.
