The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) assured to strengthen the Metro Manila Road Safety Action Plan (MMRSAP) 2024-2028 during the Metro Manila Road Safety 2025 summit on Thursday to address the increasing cases of road accidents in the National Capital Region.Attended by MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes, national government agencies and stakeholders from various sectors, the event discussed MMRSAP’s role in ensuring safer roads for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Engr. Ryan Tacbad of the Traffic Engineering Center, discussed his presentation of road crash incidents classification by collision type, fatal case in Metro Manila in 2024:Pedestrian-related crashes had the most deaths, with 111 fatal cases.Self-accidents, usually caused by mistakes like speeding or not paying attention, came next with 77.Rear-end crashes were third, with 60 fatal cases. The MMRSAP is built around five key pillars: • Road Safety Management – enhancing both the quality of services and the overall system. • Safer Roads – upgrading and improving road infrastructure. • Safer Vehicles – requiring vehicle owners to comply with strict regulations to guarantee vehicles are safe to drive. • Safer Road Users – educating drivers, commuters, and pedestrians on responsible and safe practices. • Post-Crash Response – ensuring prompt and effective aid and emergency response following accidents.Along with MMRSAP is MMDA’s implementation of LED solar powered streetlights system installed to major roads: EDSA, C5 and Roxas Boulevard. A total of 8,210 solar led lights were installed along major thoroughfares as of June 2025.“We will fully cooperate with other government agencies such as DILG, DPWH, DOTr, LTO, LTFRB, DOH and DepEd for the public to have additional and advanced knowledge about road safety,” Artes said. At the event, officials including MMDA Chairman Romando Artes participated at the signing of the MMRSAP wall of commitment 2024-2028 to pledge for safer roads.
