Met Office warns of more thunderstorms before it gets 'hotter than Rio de Janeiro' this weekend

The Met Office has issued a warning to the public to expect more thunderstorms this week – with temperatures expected to rise to 30C in parts of the country over the weekend. According to the UK’s national weather service, Wednesday is due to be “humid and very warm” in the south of England, with a “threat of heavy, possibly thundery showers” later in the day. Thunderstorms bringing “lightning, hail and heavy rain” are set to batter much of the south east of the country overnight before clearing on Thursday. “Elsewhere through Thursday, rain will move eastwards across the UK, clearing to showers, with some sunny spells breaking through at times,” said forecaster Paul Gundersen. “Friday will start dry in the east, with rain moving in from the west, becoming showery later.” Mr Gundersen added that many parts of the country will remain dry on Saturday, with a patch of rain moving south east and easing. Sunday could see “variable cloud and showers” in the north, with “patchy rain and drizzle in the west”. Otherwise, it should stay dry with sunny spells. It’s good news for those in the south of the country, as temperatures could hit highs of 30C over the weekend, making it hotter than Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It’s too early to say whether or not that heat will reach Somerset and, more specifically, those attending Glastonbury Festival . The gates to the festival site officially opened at 8am this morning, with thousands of revellers making their way across the 900 acre site to set up camp for the next five days. Some of the biggest names in music, including Olivia Rodrigo, Charli XCX, Rod Stewart and The 1975 are on the bill for this year’s event. The Met Office has said that festivalgoers heading to Worthy Farm can expect a “typically British mix” of weather, although for the most part the forecast suggests it could be a very pleasant event where weather is concerned. In other words pack both your poncho and your sunscreen.
