Senior India cricketer Jasprit Bumrah and broadcaster Sanjana Ganesan have opened up about their initial meetings, which started during the 2019 World Cup in England. While Ganesan recalled Bumrah being aloof and how she thought that he probably wasn鈥檛 single, Bumrah said he was just shy.
The couple tied the knot in 2021 after a few months of dating. They have a son, Angad, who was born in 2023. The couple were on former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and his wife Geeta Basra鈥檚 YouTube show before the ongoing five-Test series in England. Videos of their interaction have been recently released.
鈥淪o, this was in 2019 in the World Cup. I was working there, so I was obviously around practices a lot,鈥 Ganesan recalled, as quoted by Sportskeeda. 鈥淚 know a lot of the other boys like DK [Dinesh Karthik], etc. When I used to walk onto the field, they used to wave 鈥榟i鈥 very casually and I would go about my work. And Jasprit, he鈥檚 standing in a group of people that are all saying 鈥榟i鈥 to me and he鈥檚 making this (stoic) face,鈥 she added.
鈥淢ujhe laga maybe girlfriend hogi, wife hogi (I thought maybe his girlfriend or wife would be watching). She must be seeing him sitting from somewhere. I noticed him because he had this wall up and he鈥檚 like main to 鈥榟i鈥 nahi bolunga, eye contact bhi nahi banaunga. Main toh aise dekunga. [I won鈥檛 talk or make eye contact. I will give this look]. I was like either I have done something or that鈥檚 his personality,鈥 she added.
Bumrah denies Ganesan鈥檚 claim
Speaking further, Bumrah cheekily denied his wife鈥檚 claim, questioning her logic and assumptions about him being married.
鈥淭his story is a bit one-sided. First, she thought that I was married. No clue where she got that idea from. My nature is a bit shy. I usually don鈥檛 open up with new people. It takes time for me to open up. So, I didn鈥檛 know her and I don鈥檛 randomly say 鈥榟i, hello鈥 to people. But, she assumed that I am married and my wife was watching from somewhere. That鈥檚 why I wasn鈥檛 saying 鈥榟i, hello鈥 to her. What kind of logic is this?鈥 he said.
Bumrah played the Headingley Test in England and was interviewed by Ganesan during it. Team India is said to be considering whether to play him in the second match in Birmingham, from July 2, or not.
