Dubai: In a grand celebration of Karnataka’s cultural unity in the UAE, Mangalore Konkans Dubai (MKD) hosted its signature event “Mattov” at the Lavender Hotel, Al Qusais. The vibrant evening brought together over 225 guests, including presidents and office bearers of Karnataka-based associations, community leaders, and well-wishers, to honour culture, camaraderie, and community contributions.
A symbolic inauguration and inspiring speeches
The event began with a traditional sapling plantation ceremony, marking growth and unity. MKD President Stephen Menezes warmly welcomed the gathering. The inaugural was graced by Vignesh S, CEO of Thumbay Group; Pratap Mendonca, co-founder of Design Infinity LLC; and Padma Shri Dr B.R. Shetty, entrepreneur and philanthropist. MKD past president James Mendonca and other executive committee members were also present.
In his address, Vignesh S highlighted the core values of Thumbay Group and connected them to MKD’s community service vision. Pratap Mendonca urged guests to embrace “RCB — Respect, Confidence, Bravery” as a mantra for success. Dr B.R. Shetty fondly recalled his journey with MKD and praised their work in promoting Konkani culture and unity.
Sadhan Puraskar for Alwyn Pinto
The evening’s highlight was the conferring of MKD’s first-ever Sadhan Puraskar to Mr. Alwyn Pinto, recognising his lifelong dedication to Konkani culture and community service. Mr. Pinto, accompanied by his wife Prescilla Pinto, was led to the stage in a grand procession with a Mangalorean brass band and Damaskachi satri (umbrella of honour). He received a shawl, garland, fruit basket, Urmal (crown of honour), and a memento.
Past president James Mendonca also honoured Mrs. Prescilla Pinto for her unwavering support. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Pinto expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who supported his cultural and humanitarian work.

A series of powerful messages from UAE-based Indian community leaders echoed the event’s theme of unity. Among them:

Folk culture comes alive
The event burst into colourful celebration with cultural performances, including Gumta, Vovio (verse singing), Maando songs, Baila dances, and folk dances that lit up the stage. These vibrant acts celebrated the rich traditions of Konkani heritage and drew loud applause from attendees.
The Family Fiesta 2025 poster was launched on the occasion, with participation from Lancy D’Souza, Manoj Vas, Benedict Pinto, and event organisers Stephen Menezes and Roshan D’Silva.
Symbolism and hospitality
Guests were welcomed in traditional Mangalorean style with jaggery, coconut scrapes, jasmine flowers, and water. A unique gift of live plants symbolising growth and sustainability was presented to dignitaries. Business leaders including Lancy Madtha, Shameer, Rocky Rego, Jockim Menezes, Ramachandra Hegde, and James Mendonca felicitated community leaders with tokens of appreciation.
Organisers and closing
The event was expertly hosted by Floyd, and MKD Vice President Rajesh Sequeira delivered a warm vote of thanks. Secretary Goldina D’Souza, Treasurer Melroy Pinto, Media Coordinator Ashith Pinto, and the entire MKD committee worked tirelessly to ensure the success of Mattov.
