Manchester United given 'no good options' transfer verdict as Ruben Amorim handed bad news

Prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a reunion with former boss Ruben Amorim this summer, but Manchester United look set to miss out as it’s been reported that Gyokeres has agreed a deal with Premier League rivals Arsenal – and some fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section say that time is running out on the club’s search for an elite striker to propel them back to the top. United are keen to overhaul their attacking options after goalscoring became a real struggle for them last season, bringing in Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and mulling over a third bid for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. A new elite striker is on the cards too after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to inspire, and Viktor Gyokeres, the Portuguese top league’s best goalscorer, has been heavily linked to United. The race for Gyokeres could be over as journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims that Arsenal have agreed a five-year deal with Gyokeres and will be negotiating with his current club Sporting over a transfer fee. Like United, Arsenal have found themselves wanting a striker to tip them over the edge – in their case, for challenging for the league title. It’s another piece of disappointing news for United fans – but some are saying that it was the expected outcome for them. Reader Steviweavi says: “Its not really a bombshell is it. Gyokeres wants CL football, we don’t have it. Amorim was also clear, he only wants players who want to play for United, not just to play in a specific competition.” Reader Trouble4 writes: “He was always going there. Players very rarely follow managers. When it’s happened with us it’s mostly been a disaster, just look at Ten Hag’s signings. Players go to the best offer, not an ex-manager. No big deal.” Anniemause says: “It was always a distinct possibility, but that it’s becoming a reality leaves United with no good options left. If Watkins (who was not a automatic choice last season for Villa) is the best now on offer then United are just going to pay over the odds for a player who likely is getting past his best and it will be up to Hojlund again to improve his performances. “It’s another poor summer in the transfer window (buying Cunha and potentially Mbeumo only takes United so far) and this window is down to Ineos 100%. I still don’t get why they have bought players to fill the places of United’s two best performers last season (Amad and Fernandes).” It’s still worth fighting for Gyokeres, says Realperson: “We need a goal a game striker and there are few of them around. Gyokeres has proved he can do that in Amorim’s system and has history of living and playing in England with Coventry. He has an agreement he can leave at the right price. We need to find that price. “We’ve structured the team for him with the new number 10s. Gyokeres is the next piece of the jigsaw. Don’t spend £55 million on a 29 year old Ollie Watkins. I’d rather promote Obi if we can’t get Gyokeres.” It’s not a big deal for Moin-star: “You can stick Kane up front and still make no difference, it all depends on service… yeah I’m a bit gutted he’s going to Arsenal. Let’s give Rasmus one last chance to see what happens. My gut feeling is, he might pull it out the bag this coming season. If not, put Bruno up front as a false 9.” Have your say!
