One of the men inside a black BMW that flipped on its roof in a horror crash in London’s Piccadilly Circus is fighting for his life, police confirmed. Two men, both 22, were freed from the wreckage and rushed to hospital after the motor ploughed into London’s most famous roundabout at around 5.30am on Sunday morning. A Met Police spokesman said: “One of the men is in a life threatening condition. The other man鈥檚 injuries are not believed to be life threatening.” Emergency services raced to the scene after the horror smash, which saw the motor plough into the memorial fountain at the centre of the iconic landmark. All roads leading to the junction were closed off after a huge police cordon was erected around the site . Dramatic pictures from the scene show the wrecked black car on its roof with its front end crumpled. A large police presence remains at the site as officers investigate the incident on Sunday afternoon. A Met Police spokesperson said: 鈥淎t 05:28hrs on Sunday, 29 June police were called to Piccadilly Circus following a single vehicle road traffic collision. “A black BMW had overturned, ending up next to the Eros fountain. Officers attended with London Ambulance Service paramedics and the London Fire Brigade. 鈥淭wo men, both aged 22 and both occupants of the vehicle, were taken to hospital. One of the men is in a life threatening condition. “The other man鈥檚 injuries are not believed to be life threatening. No pedestrians were injured and no other vehicles are believed to be involved. There are road closures in place around Piccadilly Circus. “We recognise the disruption this will cause. We will look to remove these at the earliest opportunity but only when we have carried out the work required to investigate this serious incident.鈥 A London Ambulance Service spokesperson paramedics were on the scene with four minutes of being called. They added: “We treated two people. We took one patient to a major trauma centre and the other patient to a local hospital.鈥 Photos shared by passers-by and bus users show the vehicle on its roof and it appears to have come to a stop at steps at the base of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, also known as Eros. The historic fountain and statue do not appear to have sustained damage, but several large bollards appear to have been uprooted close to the wreckage of the car. One eyewitness shared a photo on social media and said the car “seems to have driven straight into the fountain.” They added: “Roads leading to and away from it seem to be closed off by tape. Biggest roundabout in London closed off on a weekend, what a day.” For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here .
