Malaysian Employee Alleges Boss Demanded Live Location During Annual Leave

A Malaysian woman revealed that her manager insisted that she provide her live location, including when travelling abroad, ostensibly to verify that she was really on vacation while on an annual leave. Following this, the woman received online support denouncing the demand as a grave invasion of privacy.
The woman, who went by the handle nnadrahhh, shared the shocking request on social media on June 10 and asked other users if it was 鈥渘ormal.鈥
The woman claimed that even if an employee had already requested leave, their employer stated that it was a 鈥渘ew rule鈥 that applied to all employees and that non-compliance would result in their being recorded as 鈥渁bsent鈥 if they did not identify their live location.
The woman claimed to have visited a Malaysian island but did not disclose the name of her company. Offended by the absurd request, she shared a picture of herself by the sea to prove that she was having fun. She then received multiple calls from her supervisor.
Hundreds of users commented on her post, criticising the company鈥檚 conduct.
鈥淭his is not normal. Your boss is crazy,鈥 one wrote, per the outlet.
Another questioned whether the demand was legal, asking, 鈥淗ow can your boss breach your privacy like that? Staff can do whatever they want during their annual leave.鈥
Some went on to say that these kinds of requests were only fair if the business was funding the trip. 鈥淲hat they do is a threat to your safety and your personal life. I would quit and get a new job if it were me,鈥 another comment read.
In response to other social media users, the woman stated that the company requests real-time location data even when employees are on unpaid and sick leave. According to Malaysia鈥檚 labour law, workers are entitled to at least eight days of paid yearly leave. She also warned to alert the Malaysian Department of Labour if the company did this again.
Earlier, an HR supervisor in China generated a great deal of social media anger after brutally reprimanding a young female employee who requested only an hour off work due to a fever. The unnamed woman posted images of a conversation with the HR supervisor on social media, revealing the rude and demeaning responses she received after requesting sick leave.
The public was furious about the situation, with many criticising the manager鈥檚 lack of professionalism and compassion.
